Too much caffeine is a no-no

“Too much” are the key words. Moderate intake of caffeine is considered okay, just don’t go overboard. A cup of coffee in the morning won’t do any harm. But some researches have said that too much intake of caffeine could lead to miscarriages and low birth weight. Though some studies suggest there is no relationship between the two, why take the risk?

Don’t overheat your body

Saunas and hot tubs in NZ may feel like a heavenly solution to all those pregnancy aches and pains. But overheating your body may increase the chance of birth defects as pointed out by several studies.

Hot tubs over 100 degrees and strenuous, prolonged exercise can increase your core body temperature which is unfavourable during pregnancy. Make sure to take constant breaks when exercising. Invest in a rectal thermometer to make sure your body temperature is not exceeding the safe number. Avoid the forbidden foods

Some foods are considered unsafe for consumption when pregnant. Eating the above could put the mother in the risk of infections caused by several bacteria like salmonella, E coli, Listeria etc., which could cause unnecessary problems in pregnancies. Avoid the obvious taboos; smoking, alcohol and drugs

The toxic substances that a smoker smokes in, enters their blood stream. Blood is the only source of nutrients and oxygen to foetuses, so contamination of the blood of the mother will not go so well for the baby. What most pregnant mothers don’t realise is that passive smoking could be equally harmful to their babies. Pregnant ladies should strive to avoid passive smoking, as much as they strive to avoid smoking. Alcohol, as we all know, should be strictly avoided during pregnancy. Same goes for drugs.

The Stress

Easy said than done, but try to be the happiest you have ever been. The little bundle of joy that you are eagerly waiting to share your life with, might also make you feel giddy sometimes when you think of all those responsibilities and how your life is going to change when they are here in your arms. Stress is never good for anyone, it’s especially bad when you are pregnant. So, be happy. Surround yourself with positivity.

Be extra cautious. Read the labels twice. Avoid taking unnecessary risks. Be mindful of those over the counter medicines. Watch what you eat. You are growing a little human inside you, whom you will love and cherish for the rest of your life. Enjoy your pregnancy but leave no room for regrets.
